You probably want to have a regular mani-pedi treatment at the nail salon, but you are clueless about how much do you tip a nail tech. You don’t really want to offend the tech. Who knows? You may need further treatment later. So, what’s the etiquette for nail salon treatment?
How Much Do You Tip a Nail Tech? The Standard ‘Regulation’
Believe it or not, there is a certain etiquette when you are getting a personal treatment – whether at the hair salon or at the nail salon. The standard regulation is to give the manicurist between 15% and 20% of the total charge. When you have a $20 manicure treatment, for instance, it would be the standard to tip $3 to $4. But then again, it depends on the type of the treatment. If it is only a regular and quick one (not involving acrylics or gel), the tip may seem fair.
Many nail artists state that giving tips less than 20% may be offensive for some technicians. Basically, if the nail tech is friendly and has done a great job, then you are free to give them how much you believe worth it. It’s better to make them feel appreciated because they will make sure to deliver the best service for your next visit.
It would be great if you can develop a good and positive relationship with your manicurist. Give them at least 20% – not less. If you have a pedicure, give them not less than 20% too. What if you have two technicians for your manicure and pedicure? Don’t be cheap. Give them each the tip of what they deserve. NEVER tip 20% where they have to split it between themselves.
Doing It Right
Aside from the fact that providing tip would make you look generous – and the tech won’t refuse you for the next treatment – you also need to know the proper way to give the tip. For instance, if you pay with a credit card and you include the tip within it, then it may be likely that the technician doesn’t get it. Yes, it may be a dishonest and wrong (business) practice, but it does happen.
So, if you pay with a credit card, it’s always a good idea to have cash handy. A $10 or $20 bill won’t hurt your wallet. And trust me, your manicurist will appreciate you giving them the cash directly to their hand. So, now, not only you learn about how much do you tip a nail tech, but you also learn about how to properly do it.
